Located
on the north east coast of The Island, enjoying
views across The Solent towards Portsmouth and the
shipping lanes, Ryde has miles of golden sands. The
town is the gateway to the eastern isle, with the
Fast Ferry Link, Hovercraft and car ferry which
comes into Fishbourne, just to the
west
of Ryde and only 8 minutes to Abingdon lodge. From Ryde you can catch a bus to the
Islands principal towns or take the train through to
Brading, Lake, Sandown and Shanklin.
A
level walk along the esplanade will take you passed
the ice rink, ten-pin bowling, pitch and putt and a
children’s fairground. There is also a tidal
harbour
and fantastic views. Keep walking and you
will
pass Appley Tower, a great place
for the children to play and the adults to chill
out. Keep walking and if you make it passed the cafes
you can take the road train back – after all, you
are on holiday.
Ryde is the second largest town on The Island.
The
shops are located in The High Street and Union
Street and here you will find most of the High
Street chains as well as local, more unique
shopping. There are plenty of pubs, cafes and
restaurants offering a wide variety of types and
styles of eating. As you walk Down The High Street
and Union Street, there is usually a large ship
passing up The Solent on its way to Portsmouth or
Southampton, always reminding you that on this
beautiful Island you are never far away
from
fantastic views or the sea.
The
pier at Ryde is where many visitors access The
Island. Built in the height of the Victorian era,
the pier still welcomes visitors from across the
Country. With Ryde sloping up from the sea, it is
easy to pick out the large Victorian properties,
which were originally built for the gentry.
